Confession time…
I have a bit of a confession to make; I don't believe in CKD. By that I mean I think we are doing patients with eGFRs of 45 or 55 a disservice by telling them they have 'Chronic kidney disease stage 3'. I am not convinced that the numbers we will harm by telling them they have CKD stage 3 are worth the tiny number we may save from dialysis/transplant.
  Cost-effectiveness of screening for CKD

This paper looked at whether screening the population with a one off eGFR was a cost-effective measure. Of course this isn't what we currently offer, as we tend to 'screen' because we are testing for other reasons, but it is an interesting question.
